Plans to build a new football stadium that Rotherham "will be proud of" have been submitted to a local council, it was revealed.

A new 12,000 seater stadium for Rotherham United Football Club would see the club return to the town since leaving the Millmoor stadium in 2008. Since then, Rotherham United have been playing their npower League Two games at Sheffield's Don Valley Stadium.

Club chair Tony Stewart hopes the council will approve the "exciting" plans for the site "that ticks all the boxes". The club also included an environmental impact assessment in the proposals which it hopes may help the council to consider approving the plans.

Mr Stewart said that if approved, the stadium will be something "very special". He added: "We still have work to do but we are moving closer and closer to having something very special that not only can the whole town be proud of, it will also benefit the wider community too.

"The site ticks all the relevant boxes and I am very excited to put forward the plans that have taken months of hard work and effort to put together."
